In the decades following the establishment of the earliest colonial assemblies, political life in the settlements grew increasingly complex. Although governors appointed by the Crown held formal authority, local representatives gradually gained influence by controlling taxation and funding for public works. This balance of power did not emerge from grand constitutional design but from practical negotiation: colonists insisted on a say in matters that affected their livelihoods, while governors relied on assemblies to implement policy. Over time, these uneasy compromises laid the groundwork for a political culture that valued participation as much as obedience.

Lobster Biological components
The lobster’s heart sits in the back, under the rear of the hard shell (carapace). It pumps blood through arteries to the body. Unlike in vertebrates, the blood doesn’t flow through capillaries—but spills into open spaces between organs. It then drains back toward the heart through loose channels into the pericardium (the cavity around the heart). From there, it re-enters the heart through six valve-lined openings that shut during heartbeats to stop blood from flowing backward.

For example, a child might say “milk” to mean “I want milk,” “Look, milk,” or “Where is my milk?” Because the child’s speech is brief[13], listeners must use context, tone, and the situation to understand the full message. Listeners interpret meaning by watching facial expressions, [14]noticing gestures, and listening to tone. As children grow, they begin adding more words and relying less on context alone.

A few words remain to be said concerning the harnessing of geothermal energy. The subterranean reservoirs of steam and superheated water, when tapped by boreholes, [19]manifest themselves in definite and, in many cases, remarkably efficient forms of power generation. [20] Basalt, rhyolite, andesite, and other volcanic rocks, when fractured by tectonic forces and permeated by meteoric water, and all reveal this conductive potential. The Hveragerði fields demonstrate it in a particularly instructive manner, and when properly drilled and capped, self-sustaining wells of great output and longevity are established in such regions.

While it remains widely held that the fundamental principles of astronomy were largely established by the seventeenth century, this view obscures the subtler yet profound developments of the eighteenth. [21] It was in this later period, for instance, that the precise quantification of stellar aberration and nutation, [22] phenomena long observed but imperfectly understood, provided the empirical scaffold upon which celestial mechanics could be refined. Indeed, the labor of a handful of meticulous observers did more to calibrate our cosmic charts than a library of speculative philosophy.

Passage 11

Funding “null” research

In scientific research, a “null result” happens when a study does not find a statistically significant effect or does not support the original hypothesis. Even so, null results can still be valuable because they help researchers avoid repeating the same dead ends and can correct earlier claims that turned out to be overstated. However, some labs hesitate to share null results because journals and grants often reward exciting, positive findings. As a result, researchers may spend money and time unknowingly duplicating studies that already failed to show an effect.

The continent of Ethiopia stands as the traditional birthplace of the coffee plant, yet several centuries elapsed before the bean found significant favor beyond the Horn of Africa. The local cultivators of Kaffa initially consumed it in rituals, and it was only by the slow currents of Red Sea trade that the wider Muslim world learned of the potent berry that had come to be their cherished stimulant. But there grew up a considerable demand between Yemen and the Levant: the Arab merchants sailed to[25] procure the coveted beans for the Sufi monasteries, and Ottoman sultans more than once issued decrees both to control its sale and to curb its public consumption.
